All the group winners have advanced to the 1/4 final. First time in the history of the world cup that has happened.

With the exception of the final moments in each game, this knockout round has been really boring to watch. It’s like a corny action movie: the main characters endure drama and hardship to always emerge over challengers in the final moments. Heartbreak city.

The last 6 games have had 0 goals at halftime, and now all the usual suspects are through and all the scrappy, exciting underdogs are out: Mexico, Chile, Switzerland, USA, the African teams. What made the group stage so exciting was all the goals and the upsets. Not a lot of chance for that now with the remaining teams. I’m really hoping that Belgium, Costa Rica, and Colombia have good fortune in the coming games.

None of the remaining superpowers appear to be in top form. They are all vulnerable and have been advancing by the skin of their teeth lately.
