I think everyone American does that. Apparently they thought cities just have “city” added to the end of them like New York City. I’ve had this conversation with a few Chinese people in Chengdu – how NYC needs to have the City distinction because it’s in New York state. Anyway, slightly Chinglish contraction for Chengdu.
