ParticipantA little surprised it has not made it’s way to the forum.
Shocking news to come from Boston yesterday.
Sympathy to all the people of Boston and all those who visited, participated and watched.

KeymasterI woke up yesterday and saw photos from the Boston marathon on Weixin that a friend that I met in Chengdu (painter Will Kerr, who is from Boston and is there now)… with a note that said “condolences” and I had no idea what he was talking about. As soon as I got on Reddit though, it was the top post and I shortly thereafter saw Obama’s address about it.
I’m still confused about the event though, I don’t understand who would do that. I’m surprised that anyone was able to get bombs that close to the finish line of the marathon, also. I’ve been at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC a few times and the security post 9/11 was insane.
Anyway, very unexpected and tragic event. I know a few forum members on here are from Boston.

ParticipantI remember reading about him.. unfortunately didn’t meet him.
I think more and more the world is a small place. I know quite a few people from home who have been there, some may still be.
I think the ties for Irish people to Boston, but also the States in general is pretty strong. About 100 people from Ireland I’ve read participated in this years marathon.
I can remember I being a student in SF in 2001 and the shock of watching 9/11 unfold the week after I returned to Ireland.
It is tragic and the true numbers and picture will emerge in the next few days.
Can’t understand why? At the moment I believe they are saying that it might be caused by domestic group.
And that there were other unexploded devices at the scene. A worry.
Marathons in Ireland are pretty lax in terms of security. There are usually smaller racing events every two weeks in Ireland with little security. Always very family orientated and happy occasions.
Best wishes to Boston forum members and hope their families and friends are at least safe.

ParticipantMy whole family was there, saw it happen. Thankfully they are ok, as they were standing on the opposite side of the street. My friend lost an ear and needs facial reconstruction. Pretty shocking thing to wake up to indeed.

ParticipantI once just stood on the spot where the bomb exploded in 2011!
People who plotted this tragedy really suck.

KeymasterI’ve been following news related to this all day – really crazy to hear about how all of this is unfolding. So last night the FBI released images of two suspects and within a few hours more photos and videos of these two were unearthed. Some showed the bags they carried with the IED’s, even showing one resting on the ground right next to the suspect two minutes before it detonated.
Then an insane manhunt began and from what I understand, one has been apprehended following a car chase involving a stolen car with more explosives detonated and shots fired in a high speed pursuit. One police officer at MIT was shot and killed, which evidently was when he discovered one or both of them as they were planning to deploy more explosives there.
Super crazy. They are looking for more explosives and clues in Boston.

ParticipantI heard one suspect is dead and they are after the other. Also, something about them being Russian, but that was not from a good source so I don’t know how true it is.

ParticipantAccording to FP updates one suspect is dead the other is at large. They are believed to be Chechens, Tamerlan (dead) and Dzhokar (at large) Tsarnaev. And yeah an MIT security guard was killed as well. Going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.

ParticipantAny of you see the interview with their uncle? Their uncle is like..
They’re losers. They don’t deserve to live on this earth. (The one who died) deserves to get shot.
Hilarious. He’s so ashamed to be related to them and basically just saying like, it’s not islam or chechnya or anything like that – it’s just that those 2 are shitty people. Sounds about right!
