ParticipantI’m looking to buy a new tablet and after some fairly thorough research, I’ve decided on the Microsoft Surface RT. Does anyone in the forum have one? If so, where did you buy it and how much did it cost? I assume computer city probably has them, but that place is a wee bit shady, and I just want to make sure I’m buying quality.
Thanks in advance for your help.

KeymasterI would get it at Computer City, I doubt there’s anywhere else that you can really get it locally. I suggest pricing it out on Taobao and then going to Computer City to negotiate with that number in mind, or find a Taobao vendor selling it in Chengdu and visit them directly.
So far the Surface has been a flop, so Microsoft has recently been dramatically cutting the price. Hopefully that price drop applies to China, but I’m not certain (it might apply to Hong Kong and not the Mainland). From a cursory check on Taobao, it looks like the 32gb Surface is the same price as the 32gb iPad). Apparently the keyboard is pretty essential to the Surface so I would factor that into the price – looks like it’s around 600 kuai.

Good suggestion – if you don’t need to see/use the Surface before you buy it, Jingdong is a fair price and they offer fast delivery and cash on delivery.

ParticipantThe flop news is surprising, most of the reviews I’ve digested have it almost on par with the iPad, and if you plan on doing more word processing and actual work then a lot of websites rank it higher than the iPad. Good news for those who still plan on buying it.

Have you ever been inside a Windows Store?
I went to one last year in the Mall of America in Minneapolis, which has an Apple Store directly across the hall. The Apple Store is packed and the Windows Store is empty all day long. Essentially all Windows Stores were like that (read this review, it’s good) and that was the only place the Surface was even for sale for the first 6 months.
Most industry analysts were bearish on its prospects since Microsoft emulated the iPod with the Zune years ago and that didn’t end well. The long term prospects aren’t good, especially for the RT since it can’t run normal Windows software. iOS just got Office and OneNote and all the best developers are on iOS because that’s where the revenue is.
Microsoft recently announced they’ve lost $900 million on the Surface in the last quarter, too.

ParticipantWindows phones are doing Ok. The Nokia 520 is a sensational budget phone for around $100 (here its about 1000 kuai). The Lumia 1020 has a stunning camera and has also received strong reviews. I fooled around with a 520 and thought it was fantastic, especially for the price.

They are slashing the price on Windows phones for sure, but Windows and Nokia both have to do that or else very few people are going to buy those phones. Same deal with the Surface. Android and iOS are tough competition, at the low and high end respectively.

Pretty smart if you ask me! Android is a better operating system with an undeniably bright future.
