getting visa/mastercard

Hey, does anyone know if it’s possible to get a visa or mastercard DEBIT card in Chengdu. Bank of China said i must get a credit card, but that i need 200,000 kuai in the bank to be eligible!? WTF! I just want a debit card that i can use overseas (i think they call it a “shuang bi ka”? Thanks people…

Not to say that it’s impossible, but I have yet to encounter anyone who’s done this before. If you manage to pull it off, congratulations.

Just got one at China Merchant’s bank. pretty simple, need 50,000 kuai to open the account, and if the balance drops below that the penalty is only 10 kuai a month. All the paperwork’s in Chinese. man, I REALLY need one of those Pleico OCR’s…..

Congratulations! I actually already have an account at Merchants Bank – they’re pretty great and I was recommending them even before I knew that getting a visa card was an option. Next time I’m in a Merchants branch I’ll definitely inquire about this. Thanks for the info, tigerkuma.
