Hm. Well, I see lots of beautiful young women who are nicely dressed in Tongzilin. ‘Dressed up or nicely’ is always relative, but the women I’m talking about would hold their own in any big city. It’s not that ALL women dress this way. There’s always the chinchilla and lace bikini or jammie crowd, too. I just think it’s easier to start out a little more formal and then ease into the situation. But that’s just me. Good luck Jessica!
Depends on the occasion. I once did corporate business training at IBM and the other foreign teacher turned up in sandals and shorts. Now i ain’t the sharpest dresser (Brendan once hurtfully enquired if I’d stolen my boots from a homeless man) but sometimes you gotta make an effort.
BTW: Tongzilin ain’t Chengdu…check out the North train station for a more representative sample

Did you steal the boots from the homeless man? Or did he give them to you because even he didn’t want to be seen in them?

Chinese women here take a lot of styling cues from the Japanese loli subculture. “Cute” (prepubescent) is what they strive for. It’s odd to see women in their 30s-40s still doing this.

Everything studded with dozens of everything
UGG boots knockoffs (Men also enjoy wearing UGGs)
Flower designs/prints
Straight cut bangs (to look like dolls) regardless of whether it’s flattering for their face shape
You see lots of trends catch on like wildfire. Last summer it was the tops with holes over the shoulders, and flip flops with big plastic flowers. Looking forward to what will be hot this summer.
I agree with Julian, though. Start formal, ease into it, but stay classy.
