Participanthi, my friend Duette Maxon is a certified Doula from the U.S. and childbirth educator. Duette is the only certified HypnoBirthing instructor in China. She has been running HypnoBirthing classes in Beijing and Shanghai for a year now and helped a lot of couples have the birth they wanted! I’d like to share here that Duette will be coming to Chengdu soon to do 3 things:
1) a Hypnobirthing Course for English speaking couples.
2) a Calm Childbirth course in Chinese, for pregnant mothers, with fathers attending as well, hopefully (their choice) on the Sunday class. (It is not able to be the same as HypnoBirthing® – it is a trademarked program, using copyrighted and approved materials, scripts that are in English only, and not approved for translation as of yet. But the conceptual framework will be similar, full two way translation provided)
3) a lecture for Doctors and other medical and birth support personnel for the 60-70 staff members at Chengdu New Born Maternity Hospital. I think this speaks volumes about their commitment to natural and undisturbed birth! They are forward thinking, but also what they might not know yet is this is also evidence based best practice! The Research shows about HypnoBirthing: From 2005-2010 U.S. Data: HypnoBirthing® mothers birthed via C-Section 17% of the time, compared the the national average of 32%
HypnoBirthing® mothers birthing vaginally had epidural anesthesia 23% of the time, compared to the national average of 71%More of HypnoBirthing’s Positive effects noted in studies: Shortened Length of Labor
Higher Apgar Score for babies
Lowered chance of Postpartum Depression
Lowered need for Pain Medication/Epidural
Lowered chance of C-Section, Episiotomy, Forceps, VacuumReferences and graphs: see the following two links:

HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress free undisturbed birthing. HypnoBirthing teaches couples the art and joy of experiencing birth in a safe, more comfortable manner for themselves and their babies. Through guided imagery and self-relaxation tools, women learn how to call upon their bodies’ own natural endorphins and thus eliminate or greatly reduce the need for medication. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when the mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.HypnoBirthing Advantages include:
Learn deep levels of relaxation to eliminate the fear that causes tension and, thus, pain
Greatly reduces and often eliminates the need for chemical painkillers
Shortens the first phase of labor
Leaves mother alert, fresh, awake and with energy
Helps keep oxygen supplied to baby during birthing
Reduces the need for an episiotomy and other interventions
Reduces and often eliminates fatigue during labor
Empowers parents with techniques to achieve a gentle, calm birth for themselves and their baby
Provides tools for the birthing companion’s integral role in the birthing
Embraces the concept of pre-birth parenting
Teaches breathing techniques that allow a woman to gently breathe her baby into the world without hard, forced pushingHappy Birthing!
