MemberChengdu air has constantly been heavily polluted for the past year and hence, no running outdoors.
I don’t know what they are gonna do about this before the Fortune 500 Forum.
This is so very frustrating..:-(

Working in construction I can tell you that when any visiting officials are due to pass by our project, we will be told in advance to essentially shut down for a specified period. We had a two day stoppage in the summer of last year because of this, and I suspect this is the tactic that the government will at least be considering for the Fortune 500 Forum. They will likely pre-plan all associated movements, and manage any construction underway within the path of them accordingly. That would reduce both immediate pollution and noise. The government also enforces this same control during final exam week for students, imposing curfews on machinery and heavy transport to reduce noise.

ParticipantIsn’t always bad! Anyway if you want really run you can do this in a Gym… sure isn’t the same!
In my thinking, don’t worry, go out and be happy!

ModeratorAs for running, I would personally use a mask as I do on my bike. From a training perspective the restrictive behaviour of the (Respro) mask that I use, actually helps improve lung capacity and oxygen efficiency. Win!!

but I heard that lung cancer has been increasing in Chengdu over the years and really, the mountains that surround sichuan basin could be a major cause as well.

I’ve mentioned this before on the forum, but I can state without hesitation that living in Chengdu has had negative impact on my health and fitness. I rarely feel like I’m truly functioning at 100%, even though I take just about every precaution I can in terms of health. I’ve been here for three successive winters, and although I’ve definitely acclimatised to it, I’ve also carried a cold for the entire duration of each. Again repeating myself, you should all be taking precaution living in this environment. Not doing so (even if you do consider yourself in some way invincible!) is folly.

Hopefully they are and will do everything they can to have it fixed.

MemberQuote:but I can state without hesitation that living in Chengdu has had negative impact on my health and fitness.Totally. I was living in another city that pollution wasn’t as bad for 5+ years before moving back to Chengdu last month. and I’ve been having problems with my throat and nose big time.

What role do the mountains play?

ModeratorQuote:What role do the mountains play? The mountains create the basin that is Chengdu, effectively retaining the build up of pollutants for extended periods of time.

ParticipantShould be common sense that air pollutants are going to cause respiratory problems… Then cancer.
I read somewhere that Chinese govt would bring those with cancer to a colony. Not sure why they would do that, but it totally undermines the problem and only hides or masks it.
I miss the days when i would run on a trail breathing sweet forest air and hear grasshoppers cricket. No way of risking my body with this air pollution… Indoor cardio is where it’s at now…
