    Hello friends.

I have China Telecom for my internet service. The speed was pretty good for the two months I had been in the city. However, coming back this week, the speed has slowed down horribly. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about resolving this, especially for one with extremely limited Chinese language skills? I tried China Telecom’s 10000 hotline number, but of course, all instructions are spoken in Chinese. So, no real help doing that.

I hope this is not a general trend in the city and something temporary related to the new year rush. Anyway, looking forward to hearing from the more seasoned Chengdu dwellers. Please advice!

    Thanks.

    Well, let’s see:

    • You’re already on the best internet you can have here (China Telecom)
    • What speed do you have? Consider upgrading. I have 100mbps fiber through China Telecom and it’s pretty fast. I keep a VPN on at all times.
    • You can call China Telecom or visit your local branch (probably where you pay your bill) and tell them you’re having problems and they can send someone to your house to check it out

Are you having speed issues with non-Chinese sites? If so it could be VPN related. More and more sites are being blocked everyday.

    Hi Charlie.

Thank you so much for the quick response and for taking the time to help me out! I did as you instructed. Embarrassingly enough, I bugged a friend living across the country on the coast to help make the call to China Telecom. Apparently, they did a “reset” and connection seems decent for now. Fingers crossed, no more issues from here on.

Thanks again a bunch! Happy new year!

P.S. For newcomers facing similar issues, China Telecom’s hotline for customer service is 10000. Unfortunately, for non-Mandarin speakers, the instructions are in Mandarin.
