I’m looking for someone that has good taste that can give me some suggestions on how to spruce up my place. It’s a pretty spacious (~120m2) 3 bedroom with a den and dining area. The landlord is a hoarder and has a random assortment of mismatched furniture. I would like to utilize the space to have a comfortable place to watch movies, maybe a sofa bed to host couchsurfers, and soundproof the office and den areas (our neighbors have called the cops on us for noise when there’s only 1 person home).

Not looking for professional service, maybe a hobbyist. Maybe we can barter or exchange services. I’m good with computers, android phones, and lifting heavy stuff.

This is what it looks like: https://chengduliving.com/forum/topic/apartment-for-rent-at-xinnanmen/

Good tip… I really doubt you need an interior designer though. Browse r/interiordesign and get inspired. But if I can impart a few tips (and I will take one from Ray):

    1. Remove everything unnecessary. Clutter is the enemy
    2. Get some plants in there. Bonus points if you get plants that will purify the air in your place
    3. Get some of these for your spot, they’re 12 kuai a piece. Bass is omnidirectional but mid and high range are not, so you can point those into the foam. If bass is the problem and those don’t do it, you can also get bass traps on Taobao for pretty cheap. China is the best place in the world to buy this stuff.
    4. Get some art on dem walls. Any print shop can fix you up for amazingly cheap, you just have to come with high resolution print-ready files. If you want to be classy, get them framed. There’s a framer on Nijiaqiao Lu near the subway which I go to, the cost for an 18″ x 24″ print is around 80 kuai.

As someone who worked design for a little while, here are some additional thoughts:

-You have a lot of neutral going on, which is great. The space has some really good bones. That means you have a lot of freedom in choosing what to highlight.

-Having said that, choose an accent color to highlight where you want eyes to go. This can be done through wall art, pillows, etc. Keep the furniture neutral and the space will maintain its size. A rug might be a good investment, to break up all that bare floor.

    – I agree that starting with a clean slate is best. If you can, go room by room and remove the furniture. Then put back only the pieces you like.  I also agree that plants will help cheer up the space and make it more homey.

    – If you buy that foam, get something to hang over it. Curtains, a tapestry – that way you don’t have to look at the black foamy walls. Drapes would also help add a layer of sound-proofing, and if you buy a texture or pattern it can help with the art! Think of it like wallpaper.

    – Remember: Art work doesn’t always have to be framed pictures (though those are nice). Mirrors, sculpture, vases full of flowers (fave of mine) – all these add depth.

    – De-clutter the bathroom and kitchen. Try to keep uniform color in the kitchen, and add some color to the bathroom.

If you have any questions, let me know! I love this sort of thing 🙂
