ParticipantGame of Thrones comes back in March!
Though, that’s not really what I wanted to talk about. What are some fun things to do during the winter while in Chengdu?
September 16, 2012 at 5:35 am #21080Federico
ParticipantI love Game of Thrones too! and yes, we must wait until March…
Good question about Chengdu winter time. Maybe that depends your style… I don’t like places with high music so I like coffee shops to speak with friends or read a book… or drink a Guinness while listening Irish music!
If you want to exercise in Chengdu, you can play bowling or laser tag… or if outside it’s still rainy, make love with your girlfriend near a fireplace!
Shit… I haven’t got a fireplace…

Participantrainy like today? btw… anyone know if the protests are over yet? i need to do some shopping at Isetan…

ParticipantI suggest not to do shopping at isetan today or tomorrow.
I have read on weibo that Isetan and Ito-Yokado are already closed.

KeymasterQuote:What are some fun things to do during the winter while in Chengdu?I’m looking forward to skiing and snowboarding, either near Chengdu at Xilin Xueshan or elsewhere in the region. Another one of my all-time favorite things to do in the winter in Chengdu is hit up spas. I wrote a post about this on Chengdu Living a few years ago: Watching the World Cup at the Local Spa. It’s the perfect place to warm up.
Otherwise I just spend a lot of time at home with the heat on!

MemberAre there actual resorts for skiing and snowboarding? Snowboarding is my life, I live in Lake Tahoe California.

KeymasterQuote:Are there actual resorts for skiing and snowboarding? Snowboarding is my life, I live in Lake Tahoe California.Yes there are. Conditions aren’t outstanding anywhere near Chengdu, but the most accessible place is called Xilin Snow Mountain and it’s pretty close. There are mixed reports on what it’s like (I haven’t been there), but I’m looking forward to finally checking it out this winter. There are more “serious” ski resorts in other regions of China although I don’t have much knowledge on them.
Tahoe is great, I was there a few months ago and took this photo from my hotel room:

MemberThat’s pretty awesome. If only I had known there was a resort so close, I would have brought my gear. How was your trip to Tahoe? What did you do there?

KeymasterQuote:How was your trip to Tahoe? What did you do there? It was great, I drove there from Sacramento with a group of friends. One of them was a previous roommate of mine, a Laotian with a knack for gambling. Over the last 10 years he’s gambled a few hundred thousand dollars at Tahoe casinos so he gets comped for everything whenever he goes there. We kicked it around Tahoe for a few days, went to casinos, clubs, ate good food, went skiing etc. Good times.

MemberNice, where did you go skiing? Sacramento is where I grew up btw. Lots of fun to be had there as well.

ModeratorWe must plan a ski/snowboard trip to Xilin or Emei this winter. I didn’t touch snow at all last winter here in Chengdu, so I’m itching for it pretty bad.

ParticipantHi, I guess people coming from resorts in the US should, as ever, be open with their expectations.
I went to Xiling a few years back. there were 2 runs, one was closed. The open one would be called the training run in the west I guess.
That’s not to say it’s not a fun trip, we got a tour package, and overnight-ed in a Spa Town called HuaShuiWan.
I ‘heard’ a new resort is been planned/built at JiuDingShan just north of WenChuan. “Biggest in Asia, 4th biggest in the world”
I guess we’ll see.

Participantsounds interesting. i might be interested in a ski trip, but “brave chengdu” makes it sound a little less appealing.
i guess if i go, i shouldnt get my hopes up.

Participant@iameric, sorry man, go, it’s kinda fun in a Chinese adventure way. there’s a few other weird and wonderful things to do too.
We even stopped at An’Ren/Musuem Cluster on the way back. I might go again this winter.
I saw Tahoe been mentioned, and I know people can be kinda serious about their snow. I didn’t want anyone going all the way out there with western style resort expectations. When it’s more of a ‘have a try’ place and been disappointed.
In the end, China changes right? I went a couple of years ago. it might be just like Whistler now. maybe.

KeymasterQuote:In the end, China changes right? I went a couple of years ago. it might be just like Whistler now. maybe.I heard it’s improved substantially over the years. This winter I will check it out. Perhaps we can organize a group of 4-6 people to head up there together in a mianbaoche.

ParticipantTahoe? Hell no, but Xiling is still a fun trip. I haven’t gone up in a few years, I think it was 2009 they shut down and revamped it (or maybe 2010?) with sponsorship from a French equipment retailer? or something, heard they have lots of good gear for rent but the prices are way more touristy, ie. much higher, than they used to be. I’d be down for a few trips up there this winter.
The hotsprings down below are great, but one thing to keep in mind: if you’re going on a multi-day trip, staying up there means you don’t have to re-buy the gondola tickets repeatedly. I guess it depends on how long you’re planning on going, but a good weekend may be: leave friday late afternoon, get to hotsprings at one of the villages near base of xiling – spend the night with beer bbq and hotsprings..wake up early, go up gondola for full day of skiing/boarding, spend a night on top of mountain where (at least a couple yrs ago) they have evening parties outside with big roast/racks of goat and shows outside at some of the hotels, another early morning wake up for full day of skiing/boarding, head back sunday evening.

ModeratorFrom what I’ve heard, it’s really shitty and not even worth going. With that said, I still want to go. Some snow is better than none. My expectations are very low.
