China Blames Separatists for Knife Attack; 33 Dead

This is quite surreal – 33 people killed in a knife (or sword?) attack. There were images of the carnage on Weibo last night but I hear that many of them have been harmonized already.

Kunming seems like a very unusual target – I would honestly expect Chengdu before Kunming since Yunnan is so geographically far from Xinjiang. Hopefully this doesn’t result in Xinjiang getting completely locked down (again) because I can picture that resulting in even more violence and unrest.

The first thing I thought when I heard this was that it reminded me of the Boston Marathon bombing – bloody, public attack committed by two from Kyrgyzstan, very near Xinjiang. This Kunming attack resulted in many more deaths though. Tragic.

Terrible story. RIP to the victims…130 more injured, unimaginable. I just received this email from the consulate, figured I’d share in case anyone happens to need it:

The fact that this was committed by Uighurs seems like a blatant fabrication of Chinese media.  I was talking with a Chinese friend about the matter and we joked about how something of this nature in no way could be committed by Han Chinese.

That said, watch out for those shao kaoers.  I hear they’re crazy when given a knife.
