ParticipantFor anyone interested we will be showing UFC 184 at The Clubhouse Live this Sunday at 11am. Doors will open at 10.30am. Unfortunately there is no Mexican Food available this weekend so feel free to bring snacks.
Awesome! I won’t be in Chengdu for this one but I’ll definitely come by for future events if you show them.

ParticipantA good friend of mine recently made the jump from the mainland to Taiwan and raves about it. I’ve heard the economy there isn’t as robust, but it’s more “livable” than the mainland – less pollution, unrestricted internet, etc. Also, the preservation of a lot of old Chinese culture, great food, pretty girls. Gonna have to check it out myself someday for sure.

ParticipantI had a shirt made with Suit Republic and couldn’t be happier with it. The suits they had around looked pretty swank too. Would definitely recommend !

ParticipantI went to Hong Kong on a visa run last week. I was able to get rush service – I applied on Monday and was able to pick up my visa Tuesday afternoon.
Kind of a drag though – my visa application was through an agency here in Chengdu, and was to be for a 6 month business visa. Ended up only getting granted 1 month.. Heard things are more stringent for visa applications in Hong Kong..talked to a few people who’d applied for 6 month tourist visas who only ended up getting 1 month as well.

ParticipantI think Anderson Silva has been fighting at such a high level for so long that he became a little too arrogant in his last fight, and he paid for it. A motivated Anderson Silva has incredible striking prowess and could take out Weidman standing easily, but is also 38 years old and in the twilight of his career. Chris Weidman is a very capable fighter, solid in all aspects, an exceptional grappler, and is young and hungry. It’s a compelling fight.

ParticipantWould this sort of thing be of benefit to a total beginner (studying < 3 months on my own), or would I just be totally lost? It sounds like a cool event.

ParticipantHey thanks for the responses/advice everyone! So the PSB said it should be fine on this end, but they didn’t know what the situation would be like in Shanghai coming back. I figure with all the hoops I’d have to jump through it really isn’t worth it, and since I can pay a small fee to change push my flight back a few days to when I get my passport/visa back I think I’ll likely do that and save myself the worry.
Hope everyone’s enjoying the holidays.
AndrewD
ParticipantYeah, I’m going to go and talk to them tomorrow. I guess if worst comes to worst I can always postpone my flight a bit for a small fee, not the end of the world.
AndrewD
ParticipantYeah I’ll definitely head to the PSB to see what they say. Will they be open at all during the holiday?

ParticipantSweet! I’m stoked I’ll be able to get to get to go to one of these, the other events have looked awesome.
AndrewD
ParticipantCool! I should be in Chengdu by this time. Email sent! Looking forward to it.

ParticipantSorry to hear that man. Good luck sorting out a new job. Be careful when you quit though – might I suggest doing so right after payday? Actually a friend of mine whom I’m currently travelling with just got swindled by his school (EF) for almost a month’s worth of wages after he quit and is having a hell of a time trying to collect his due…

ParticipantThese events look badass!!

ParticipantSweet! Hopefully this will further the growth of mma in China. I wonder how receptive people will be and what the ratings will be like.
I wonder if they’ll be encouraging the mtv-style reality show in-house drama bullshit that seemed to be such a focus of TUF in the States. I hope not. I think that sort of thing mars and tarnishes the sport and takes from the aspects of honor and respect that should be synonymous with martial arts.

ParticipantHey Taz,
Just wanted to say, good luck with the move and transition and with finding work. I’m planning on coming to Chengdu to look for my first teaching gig in China as well. For what it’s worth, I spoke with some recruiters and replied to posts/ads on echinacities and things like that and got offered positions with similar terms to yours in a couple primary schools. One was for 6000 RMB/month + accommodation and flight for 20 classes per week (50 min classes) and that seemed okay. There does seem to be a fair amount of work out there though, so don’t feel obligated to commit to the first offer that comes your way. I’m planning on taking a look and asking around in person before committing to anything but I realize that may be hard to do without savings.
Once again, good luck and all the best man. I’ll send you a PM, we should keep in touch – let me know how things go!
Cheers

ParticipantHey thanks a lot for the info guys.
@Collin I wouldn’t say I take mma altogether too seriously, being primarily (pretty much entirely) a bjj guy. I used to do more standup and more wrestling when I was gung-ho and into it and really wanted to fight, but the two amateur fights (which weren’t even full-rules!) I did end up having and the kind of training I had to do just for that convinced me I wasn’t cut out to be an mma fighter 😛 Good luck in starting up your gym, I’d love to come check it out some day.I am very excited to train in Chengdu, even if things are in the start-up phase. I have the privilege of training at an incredible gym here at home so I know it’s going to be an adjustment no matter what, but I’m just glad to know there will be some guys to roll with.
Is JerryS still instructing in Chengdu?
AndrewD
ParticipantJust have a few quick questions if you don’t mind:
Who is the instructor(s)? Are there any mma fighters training out of this gym? And, are there ever any Muay Thai events in Chengdu?
I’d love to come check out the gym when I’m in town
AndrewD
ParticipantThanks a lot for the info guys!

Participant-after July 1st, it will be impossible to change visa types (he said if you enter China on a tourist L visa, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN, he cannot help us anymore)
Will said regulation changes only prevent one from changing visas within China, or does this apply to border runs as well? I’ve been planning on coming to China on an L-visa and looking for work on the ground and then making a run to HK but these changes are making me consider seeking employment before I come over if it would mean comfortably securing a working visa.
Also, I’ve been wondering: are there a lot of foreigners out there working illegally on L-visas? Is this ill-advised, generally? I suppose it would mean a lot of visa renewal trips, anyway.

Participant10k, damn that’s really steep! Sounds like it should be no problem to find a decent place to train though.
I’ve been trying to focus mostly on heavy compound lifts for strength gains, bench/DL/squat but I’ve also been mixing in some hypertrophy training and isolation exercises for my bulk to put on some size.
Is it even possible to bulk without fat gain though? Or is that something you just have to accept, and then have to cut after..? Been bulking for ~ 2 months now and I already feel as though I’m less lean than I was, but I’m definitely getting stronger. I want to be able to lift heavy things, but I’m also concerned about aesthetics. So I often find myself wavering and questioning whether I should really be eating that much (3000 + calories seems insane to me) Guess it just takes patience and a lot of self-experimentation
