ParticipantDave,
I just walked up to a cop, told him where I lived (in Chinese), and asked where to register. He was super helpful–unlike the ass hat at the police station that hassled us in any way he could think of. We were within a day or two of getting our apartment, so no fines or anything, but he really ran us through the wringer on the paperwork. Eventually had to get our landlord and our real estate agent involved, both of whom agreed he was “er bai wu”.
Hope you get a more reasonable officer than us!

ParticipantThere’s a super chill Chinese dude named Darkle that works at Cheers Wine Bar. He does a LGBT event there every Friday night. Just walk in and introduce yourself. I guarantee you’ll leave with a considerable wine buzz and a few new friends.

ParticipantI’m fairly new here too. A vast number of people, Charlie definitely included, have gone out of their way to help me out and transition into this city. Chengdu is a special place, and it’s home to some seriously cool folks.
With all the good fortune I’ve seen, I suppose it’s time for me to start giving back–when you get here, hit me up on WeChat. My ID is adclayton. You do have WeChat already, don’t you? I’ll show you some of the great spots around town.
PS: Charlie, what the hell happened to Poly Center?! I saw you recommended it to someone else, but with some reservations. I’ve only been gone 4 months and it’s pretty gnarly now. I remember good tunes being spun there…

ParticipantEric,
I’m also interested in some things. Contact me via WeChat: adclayton. Charlie, perhaps you could pass on his contact card to me?
Cheers,

ParticipantUpdate on Fishbone Tattoo shop: I got a piece done there this week and was really impressed. Shop minimum is 700 RMB for a half hour, and the hourly rate is 1000 RMB. Both the artists there spoke good English, but were willing to chat in Chinese while working, which I appreciated. Super clean environment and they gave me some fantastic aftercare cream with vitamins.
Although it’s a bit on the spendy side, I’d highly recommend Fishbone for getting a tattoo in Chengdu. Tattoos aren’t really something you want to get cheap anyway, since hepatitis is always free!

ParticipantNiklas,
I do blues and country-rock on acoustic guitar, with a few bluegrass and old-time tunes here and there. Writing a few in (terrible) Chinese these days too.
