    I’ve used http://elong.net/ and http://www.qunar.com/

Elong is a subsidiary of Expedia and you can use a foreign credit card as well as Chinese. Qunar is all in Chinese. You can also find flights on there and then contact the airline directly and ask for that flight, I did that before when I wanted to use cash.

Thanks for posting those videos, hadn’t seen them before. The first one is from Luodai 洛带 near the fake great wall. It’s a pretty good track but that is the only thing there, about 2-3 minute downhill run. The second is from Pengzhou 彭州 which is north of Chengdu, never been there but that dude riding absolutely rips, rode with him last year a couple times, definitely the fastest guy around Chengdu. Last one is the lower part of Longquan 龙泉 which is pretty accessible but pretty short. I usually try to get out on Sundays so let me know if you are interested.

Can’t help you with books or anything but the Southwest University for Nationalities which is there in the Tibetan district has Tibetan language classes. Maybe you can go in there and ask around, they will probably want you to take classes but maybe you can get a look at the book and then buy one from Taobao/dangdang/etc.

    Hi Mark,

    Some answers.

    1. I did an XC race in Qingbaijiang almost two years ago and I think it was on that track you are mentioning. It was OK but pretty short, top of the field did 3 laps in under 50 minutes. That was the only time I went out there so can’t comment on other trails in the area but I don’t think it is worth going all the way out there for. There is more/better stuff closer. Not saying it is bad though, if someone wants to drive out it’s worth a day.

    2. Never been to Songpan but it’s the next mountain bike trip I want to do. From my experience once you get up to a good elevation in the west of Sichuan there is tons of trail and you can just do what you want, I’ve done a couple trips near Kangding/Tagong with both an XC bike and DH bike, had a blast. I met the guy who runs this company: http://www.adventure-access.com/ last year and I bet if you gave him a call he could give you some info on the area.

    3. Longquan 龙泉 is the kind of standard place to go. Just to the south of it in the Baihe 白粭 area is where most of the good trails are. That said we have been riding that same range of hills farther south outside of Taiping 太平 at an area called Danjing Shan 丹景山 and it is sick, still kind of figuring it out but there seems to be tons of potential. I will PM you my email address and if we can’t make it out together I can send you a KMZ file for Google Earth for Longquan and give you directions for Danjing Shan.

    4. Yeah man! I’ll PM I can usually ride on Sunday but I could probably pull of a weekday as well if we go early.

Wow this is great spam! I wish I had this information back when I was racing, would have been way faster. If only I had been a bro used the BRO system!

Oh man Jake calling me out! Took someone over to JiuYanQiao to look for a bike but the whole thing is shut down. We walked all the way down the alley and all the little shops that used to have bikes were empty. There were also police out on the street and a big sign on the wall that said bikes/e-bikes cant be sold there. No one there would talk to me, just shook their heads and pointed out at the road where the police van was.

I lived up in that area for a couple years and while a bit out of the way from a lot of what is going on I really liked it. Are you doing something with UESTC?

For transport it kind of sucks, 49 and I think 7 that go from over by Carrefour can get you places but a bike or e-bike was how I did it most of the time.

Foreign entertainment is kind of limited in the area but there are nice tea shops along the river, a couple malls on Second Ring Road with movie theaters, Starbucks, and JianSheLu 建设路 isn’t bad to wander around on and find snacks etc.

Food, over by JianSheLu and on JianSheXiang 建设巷 there are quite a few Chinese options. Also on a little road by the river called TaShuiQiao BeiJie 跳水桥北街 there is a row of restaurants and I think each of them are good. There is a noodle shop there that I still think is the best noodles in Chengdu.

I head up that way sometimes to see friends, I’ll shoot you a PM next time and maybe we can meet up and I show you a couple spots. Don’t worry I knew no one when I first moved to Chengdu and felt really isolated up there at first but now that I have moved down to “fashionable” Yulin I kind of miss it up there.

I’ve been out through that 高威自行车公园 a few times. I think it is your best bet for close to the city, especially since you are on that side. It kind of runs in with that “Lohas” greenway thing, they are on opposite sides of 锦江大道. Also to the northeastish it runs in with San Sheng Xiang which is OK to pedal around as well so there is a pretty big area. Have fun!

Hey guys, sorry but my coworker posted a bunch of this stuff on a QQ group for our building and the place has been looted. It took about 2 hours! The power of QQ. I’ll re-post tomorrow if there is anything else left but the microwave and fridge are gone for sure. Sorry about not posting pictures, I was in a bit of a hurry.

And Asen, why do I need so much luck to sell a table?

Hi Claudia, no problem. Yes still in Chengdu and will be studying at SWUN next semester as well. You know some days I feel my Chinese is good but there are quite a few people in Chengdu who have great Chinese so it is easy to not get arrogant. I think that is one thing that really sets Chengdu apart from other large Chinese cities, most foreigners I meet speak pretty good Chinese, it’s a good vibe in my opinion. Anyhow hope to see you next semester at school!

Welcome again Claudia. I’ve been studying at the Nationalities University this year and it’s going OK. Seems like there are a few Spanish speakers around, I had a classmate from Mexico, maybe not good for practicing Chinese but always nice to have someone to talk to in your own language.

To clarify the location, the university does have two campuses, but the foreign students and Chinese study are all at the old campus in the city on first ring road.

I work for a company/agency that connects teachers with schools. A full-time position has come up with an agency that sends students abroad. The teaching is mostly TOEFL/IELTS with some “useful/study abroad” English as well. Students will mostly be in the high school and college age range. Details:

    Full-time:

-20-25 hours per week (teaching hours, no office hours required)

    -6,000rmb (minimum, negotiable) per month

-10-20% bonus depending on work performance

    -Zvisa provided by employer

-2 days off per week (usually weekends)

-3 month trial period after which a 1-3 year contract can be negotiated.

-Located on RenMin NanLu near 2nd Ring Road and HangKong Lu

Please PM me or email me: [email protected]

Dang Justin! Assume, like Brendan, that if you are posting on here you weren’t hurt too bad. Take care though!

Yeah like Brian said we made it out there. Talking to the guy that is kind of managing the bike side of the park it sounds like a real estate investment and not necessarily dedicated to being a bike park. That means that, for example, that the spot in Brian’s second picture unfortunately will become a go-kart track. Right now I think you can just go there and not pay, but the long-term plan is to make it 100RMB a day to ride (nuts expensive).

Anyhow three of us went out yesterday and that was encouraging to get a few more people out on mountain bikes. In the future I will post about rides I’ll do (to other places probably) if anyone is interested.
