ParticipantHey hzwerks of course I remember 🙂 I just read our conversation over again, some insane advice you gave me back then! If only I’d do something with it lol. “All the knowledge in the world is useless if you can’t get yourself to apply it.”
What I’m reading so far sounds great. Megafit website shows some pictures from their Shanghai gym, looks neat and clean idd!
Only con is that it’s about 8km from my future apartment. I could run, but who am I kidding. Any idea how long u have to walk if u go by metro?
And I guess it has a couple of showers too?

ParticipantI’m moving back to Chengdu in September. This time I want the best internet connection available. Last time I just used my roommates China Telecom, and it sucked. I heard somewhere they have 2 different options though (slower/faster – cheap/expensive). Is that correct?
What are my options? Is the information above still up to date?
I wanted to type money isn’t important, but paying 2-3k/month for fiber is a little bit over the top. I’d really like good speed and stability though as I’m a heavy downloader/gamer.
Thanks for any advice.

ParticipantThank you Charlie for the tip! I’ve seen that one before indeed and it probably is better quality, but I prefer the color combo of the Meihua one. I thought taobao worked equally well if u searched with English keywords lol. Guess not 🙂
And thanks seanyuan as well, that shop is definately plan B.
Lol yea about the Zebra, funny story: I saw a Chinese guy wearing it, I went over to him and asked (I can’t speak Chinese) “Where did u buy this??” and I pointed to the Meihua logo. He just looked at me as if he’s seen a ghost, I repeat my sentence and started laughing because he clearly didn’t understand what I was saying. And then he just took it off and gave it to me hahaha. I was like “no no no” and he said “free! free!”. Only in China, right? 😀
Then a friend adviced me to try it on, and obviously it didn’t fit since I am almost 2 meters tall haha. Still had a good laugh though.

ParticipantVisit Cafe Paname, loads of foreign girls over there in the weekends and lots of fun.

ParticipantI accidently ran into the Tony&Guy hair salon recently. It’s indeed in the Yanlord Landmark (LV building, Renmin Nan Lu near Tianfu Sq) like zkoch said. If I remember correctly it was around the 3rd of 4th floor, right in front of u when you get upstairs with the automatic stairway.
Looked sick nice and probably pretty expensive. If I had any hair I would definately give it a shot though.
Vincent
ParticipantSolid advice guys, thanks! Will probably come back later when I start planning the trip.
That secret DVD dens, is it easy to enter? I mean will they just show me because I ask? Sounds pretty cool lol.
Vincent
ParticipantUhh thanks but its not my app 🙂 I’m just a user.
GL with the geo-locations thing. Doesn’t matter it won’t speak, Chinese characters will do just fine. The taxi book app uses a computer voice which sucks, never used it.
Vincent
ParticipantBlocked? I don’t have any problem visiting this website without a VPN…
Btw, 12vpn.com definately should be on the list too. It costs like $30 for a year. Their support helped me out big time with some specific questions and I never had any disconnection problems. Setup is really easy too, it uses a little tool called OpenVPN to manage the servers etc.
Vincent
ParticipantI don’t really get the negativity around the app. It does exactly what it says it does… Nothing more nothing less. You knew what you were paying for before you bought it, didn’t you? Or if not, what were you expecting?
Anyway I still think it’s a great app for the first couple of weeks living in Chengdu. I’ve used it numerous times to get me through the city doing all sorts of stuff…
Obviously if you’re already familiar with the city, you shouldn’t bother paying money for it.
Vincent
ParticipantI did not take the screenshots myself, they’re from the iTunes website.
Vincent
ParticipantI think $5 is a very reasonable price for this kind of app. It will save newcomers so much trouble if you think of the language barrier. It’s only like 2 or 3 beers anyway. If you don’t speak Chinese, only recently got to Chengdu, and have an iPhone; I think it’s a must have app to easily find out where things are and avoid communication problems with taxi drivers.
Of course if you have been living here for a long time and don’t really need it, it would be useless to spend the money.
Vincent
ParticipantGot it done today.
It took me several hours, but I finally got it. The police lady kept saying the landlord had to come as well, while I kept pointing at the copy of his ID. Eventually after a half hour of discussing in different languages and me getting angry a bit, they called him themselves. I was just sitting there, waiting, for 1.5hours, when eventually the guy showed up. Lucky for me I guess!
They barely had like a 2 minute talk, the landlord guy smiled at me, and 10 minutes later the printer started making noise. God if you’d make a business out of making Chinese people more efficient. You’d become a milionaire…

ParticipantShould I assume that an extension is impossible if I dont have a resident registration?
Vincent
ParticipantThanks for the advice hzwerks & Charlie, very useful information. I hope I can get the housing registration done in time, cause else I will encounter a lot of hassle 🙂
Vincent
ParticipantWill the fact that the contract is on a friend’s name be a problem? I’m just living with him, he did all the paperwork a few months ago…
Vincent
ParticipantI tried it this morning. At the first police station they were really nice and told me I had to be in a different station, not so far away. They were really kind (although I did not understand what they were saying), but they actually gave me a ride to the next station.
I stood there, waving with my passport and the contract, but the police lady kept pointing at the “Party A” part of the contract and saying “come! come!”. After half an hour of trying to tell her that it’s impossible because I don’t even know the owner of the apartment, she said “copy ID”.
So I’ll have to figure out a way to get this copy I guess. I contacted Maxxelli because they drew up the lease contract. I hope they have it…
Vincent
ParticipantBtw, the appartment contract is not on my own name. I’m living with a friend. Will this be a problem?
Vincent
ParticipantYour rant makes me want to read “Burn the fat, Feed the muscle”. I’ve had that book for a couple of years now and never managed to finish it.
