Premium Accommodations

If you’re here on official business, Chengdu has a healthy selection of luxurious five-star hotels with all the amenities. A lot has changed in the last five years and now Chengdu is more than equipped to accommodate the needs of even the most demanding traveler. Below is a short list of the best premium hotels in Chengdu which will have what you’re looking for whether it’s cutting-edge modernism or a traditional Chinese luxury hotel.

Jin Jiang Hotel

Jinjiang Hoteltelephone: +86 028 85507777
address in English: Ren Min Nan Lu Section 2, #80
address in Chinese: ??????80?
website: www.jjhotel.com

The Jinjiang is the Grand Old Lady of Chengdu’s high class hotels. First built in 1958, the Jinjiang has traditionally been the hotel of choice for visiting heads of state, national leaders and other important personages. With the arrival of internationally renowned hotel chains in the last five years, the Jinjiang has lost some of its market dominance, but none of its prestige. With all of the foreign brands merging into the Chengdu luxury hotel landscape, the Jin Jiang remains the top choice if you prefer classical Chinese opulence to the cosmopolitan trendiness of the Shangri-La.

The Jin Jiang is located just a short walk south from Tianfu Plaza and has world class rooms, amenities and a fine menu of Chinese, Sichuanese and Western dishes. If you are looking to live good, but not overtax your budget, then the JInjiang might be your best choice.

price: from 700rmb up to 10,000 yuan for the Presidential Suite

The Shang-ri La is the newest and flashiest
The Shang-ri La is the newest and flashiest 5-Star hotel in Chengdu

The Shang-ri La

telephone: +86 028 88889999
address: Bin Jiang Dong Lu #3
website: www.shangri-la.com

The Shangri-La is one of the most recent — and probably the most distinguished — Five-Star arrival in Chengdu. The hotel is world-class in every aspect, from the spacious and beautiful rooms to a spectacular multi-national buffet. The staff is attentive and the amenities match what any world traveler could wish for. This towering hotel is located right on the river and stands tall next to a stunningly ornate traditionally-styled bridge which is illuminated at night. Many of the suites at the Shangri-La feature two bathrooms and enough space to comfortably host four people. We’ve heard more than one person say that this hotel is plush enough to bear a strong resemblance to the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

The Shangri-La is located in a beautiful section of Chengdu and you’re sure to remain undisturbed in your luxury room when you’ve above the 30th floor with one of the best views of the city available. If you’ve got the scratch, this is the most supreme lodging available in Chengdu.

price: rooms start at 1,000 yuan

The Kempinski Chengdu
Standing tall in the south of Chengdu is the 5-Star Kempinski Hotel

The Kempinski

tel: +86 028 85269999
address: Ren Min Nan Road Section 4, #42
website: kempinski-chengdu.com

The Kempinski, located in the south of the city only a short ride from the airport, has been a mainstay of luxury in Chengdu for almost a decade. When the first line of the subway is operational in March 2010, the trip from Chengdu’s airport to the Kempinski will be a cinch. And it’ll cost a pittance.

This hotel is a good option for those who want a little more Western feel than the Jinjiang but don’t want to shell out Shangri-la cash. The buffet is outstanding and if you like German food you can enjoy that along with a Paulaner beer on tap from the Kempinski’s micro-brewery to go with your meal. The rooms are appropriately swank and the staff is friendly and helpful and speaks good English. As a bonus, right next to the Kempinski (below a traffic overpass) is one of the best art markets in the Chengdu which sells calligraphy and Chinese paintings.

price: rooms at the Kempinski start at 700 yuan

  1. We’re a group of 5 westerners taking a two week program in cooking at the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine in March 2010. We would like to be near the downtown area for restaurants and activities but close to the location of the cooking school -cn you recommend anything in the less than premium category e.g. 4 stars ( 700 RMB or less per night). Boardband internet is a must and we would like a fitness center and indoor swimming pool. If anyone would like to join the cooking program in Chinese and English-let me know.

    • Hi Mel,

All three of the above options also have specials, so you might want to contact them and see if they have a good price for a two week stay.

      Other good options are
the Crown Plaza downtown on Huaxingshang Jie
      tel:028-86786666

Sofitel, right on the river too, but they start at aroound 1000 yuan, again, if you call them up there might be a deal.
      tel: 028-66669999

      the Yinhe Dynasty Hotel
      tel:028-86618888

      and the Sheraton
      tel: 028-86768999
which might be your best bet — they have 700 yuan a night offers for long stays that I am sure of and the hotel is classy

Indoor fitness and swimming pool will keep you in this range of hotels. Once you take away those two amenities, then dozens of 200 – 500 yuan hotels become options, including one I always bring people too right off of Tian Fu Plaza next to the mosque — very nice place (200 – 400 yuan). the rooms are nice, its quiet and convenient, but no swimming pool.

  2. Are there any good service apartments? I’m gonna stay 2 month in the spring 2011 on company bill, so I’d like something nice in a vibrant area! 😀

    • We were in Chengdu in March 2010 for two weeks and had an excellent experience staying at at a serviced apartment now called SOMERSET RIVERVIEW (previously known as Shama Central Point). It had all the luxuries of a hotel (except no pool) but was far more reasonable. Each unit has a kitchen, washer/dryer and there is a great clubhouse with an exercise room, business center, yoga studio. The apartments take up 16 floors of an office tower (floor 16 to 32 I think..) and have studio, 1 and 2 bedroom units. Ours was a one bedroom, VERY spacious… lots of marble and glass. The staff was friendly (english could be improved) and it was perfectly located by in the center of town on Renmin Lu South where it meets the Jinjiang River – across the street from the Sofitel Hotel (where we stayed in 2009)

Without a doubt I would highly recommend the Somerset Riverview… PLUS friends stayed there in October 2010 and universally had the same experience.

  3. Sorry if this is another annoying FAQ but what is the best way to choose btw hotel vs studio for a 3-month stay in Chengdu? internet access is a must. Is wifi access reliable in Chengdu or better to use fixed line access from a hotel? I just need to keep in touch in work and make regular download. thanks for the great information on your website. • Hey Jerome,

If it were me, I’d definitely go with a studio for a stay of more than a month in Chengdu. Hotels will cost much more, won’t be as comfortable, and will just feel more cold and impersonal.

If you decide to rent from Hakka Homes, I think most (or all?) or their apartments include internet access. Most everything you get here will be ADSL and I’d expect the speed to be passable at the least. To find out more information on internet connections and what’s available here, there’s an in-depth thread on the topic in the forum: http://www.chengduforum.com

      Good luck,

      Charlie

    • Stay at a serviced apartment. You will be much happier than in a hotel for a stay of more than one week. The somerset riverview is an excellent choice… They have great wi-fi in all the apartments. IF your budget allows… Upgrade to the one bedroom. The price difference is minor BUT you get twice as much space. The new owners are the ascott group.

  5. Hello there.
Don’t know who’s moderating this site but I’d just like to mention that the photo of the jinjiang hotel is the wrong one. Jinjiang hotel is actually a 7 storey L shaped building on renmin nan lu, the hotel on the photo is the 4 star jinjiang business hotel on the river, that’s not affiliated with the five star hotel. Happy 2012 to you all!
